Which Hoover Dam tour fits your day

Pick the 3-hour tour if you have a short window. Pick the power plant tour if you want to see the generators and eat lunch.

The inside tour with Boulder City takes 5.5 hours and adds a town stop. The Lake Mead cruise is for people with a car, because it has no transport.

Hoover Dam also sits in many day tours from Las Vegas, and our day-trip guide compares them.

To add the Grand Canyon to Hoover Dam, see our Grand Canyon tours page.

The official Hoover Dam tours

The Bureau of Reclamation runs three tours at the dam. The guided Dam Tour costs $40 and is sold on site only. It is first come, first served, and it often sells out.

The Dam Tour takes you into the tunnels and inspection tunnels, with a look down a ventilation shaft. It also includes the Power Plant Tour. Strollers are not allowed.

The whole group must be there to buy Dam Tour tickets. You must be over 16 to tour alone. America the Beautiful passes are not accepted for tours.

The dam itself is open from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. The Visitor Center is closed on Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The tours from Las Vegas set their own start times. The 3-hour tour sends your pickup time the night before, between 6 and 8 p.m.

Yes, you can see the lake behind the dam by boat. The 90-minute midday cruise uses a paddlewheel boat with indoor and outdoor decks and recorded narration.

You need a Lake Mead National Recreation Area pass to drive in. The park service charges $25 per vehicle, valid for 1 to 7 days.

Before you book a Hoover Dam tour

The $40 Dam Tour is sold on site only and often sells out. Get there early if you want it.

  2. Leave bags behind

Tour vans take no luggage or coolers, the listings say. No knives are allowed in the dam's buildings, not even pocketknives.

  3. Know what is banned

Firearms, drones, fireworks and marijuana are banned at the dam. Visitors are screened by wand or pat-down.

  4. Watch for the pickup message

The 3-hour tour sends your pickup time the evening before. Your pickup may be at a hotel near yours.

  5. Plan for the heat

Normal July highs in Las Vegas are 105°F (41°C). Bring water and a hat in summer.
