How to choose: Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, desert and parks

Choose the Grand Canyon if it is your first big trip from Las Vegas. Grand Canyon West is the nearer rim: 122 miles away, against 278 miles for the South Rim, the park service says.

Choose Hoover Dam if you only have a morning. Choose Valley of Fire or Red Rock Canyon for red rocks and hikes in half a day.

Choose Death Valley if you want a national park and don't mind a 12-hour day. Antelope Canyon is the longest day on our list, at 15 hours.

Grand Canyon: West Rim, South Rim, bus, helicopter or plane

From Las Vegas, most day tours go to the West Rim. Grand Canyon West is on Hualapai tribal land, outside the national park. Its All-Access Pass costs $99 and includes the Skywalk.

The South Rim is in Grand Canyon National Park, 278 miles from Las Vegas. Entry is $35 per car, and non-US residents aged 16 and over pay an extra $100 each.

Both bus picks visit the West Rim, where the $100 fee does not apply. One bus tour on our Grand Canyon page also offers a West Rim plane ride as an option.

All Grand Canyon tours, including helicopters, are compared on our Grand Canyon tours page.

Closer trips: Hoover Dam, Red Rock Canyon, Valley of Fire, Seven Magic Mountains

The closer trips take 2 to 7 hours. Hoover Dam is about 30 miles away, and Red Rock Canyon is 17 miles from the Strip.

At Hoover Dam, the official $40 Dam Tour is sold on site only. The 3-hour tour on our list includes a Hoover Dam entry ticket.

At Red Rock Canyon, drivers need a timed-entry reservation from October 1 to May 31.

For a night out, the stargazing trip meets on Paradise Rd. The Nelson Ghost Town trip is rated 3.4 from 15 reviews, so read the listing first.

Hiking tours from Las Vegas

Guided hikes run in Valley of Fire and Red Rock Canyon. The guides above this section compare them place by place.

From May 15 to September 30, Valley of Fire closes many trails for the heat.

Farther trips: Death Valley, Zion and Bryce Canyon

The farther trips take 12 to 15 hours. Death Valley is about 120 miles away, about 2 hours by the fastest route, the park service's FAQ says.

In summer, Death Valley highs can reach 130°F (54°C), the park service says. The guided day on our list includes park fees and breakfast.

The Antelope Canyon trip lasts 15 hours. Guests must walk without help, and Horseshoe Bend means a 1.5-mile sandy walk, the listing says.

National park tours from Las Vegas

Death Valley and the Grand Canyon South Rim are national parks. Grand Canyon West is not: it is on Hualapai land.

Las Vegas to Zion: tours and day trips

We have not picked a Zion or Bryce Canyon tour. The one Zion product we found had no reviews yet.

Guided tour or rental car

A tour is easier: no driving, no parking, and entry is included on most picks on our list. That matters on a 10- to 15-hour day.

A rental car can cost less for a group, because many fees are per car. Hoover Dam parking is $10, Valley of Fire charges $15 per non-Nevada car and Death Valley $30 per car.

Routes, fares and the rental question are on our getting around Las Vegas page.

What to bring and the best season

Bring water, a hat and sunscreen on every trip. From June to September, normal highs in Las Vegas are 95–105°F (35–41°C).

March to May and October to November are milder, with normal highs of about 71–89°F (22–32°C), based on weather service normals.

Leave knives and big bags behind on Hoover Dam trips: no knives are allowed in the dam's buildings. Some Grand Canyon buses take no suitcases.

Only one day in Las Vegas?

If you have one free day, pick either the 3-hour Hoover Dam tour or a Grand Canyon West day. The first leaves time for the Strip; the second fills the day.

More things to do in Las Vegas by day are on our home page.

Before you book a day trip from Las Vegas

  1. Watch for the pickup message

Some tours send your pickup time the evening before. The 3-hour Hoover Dam tour sends it between 6 and 8 p.m.

  2. Expect a long day

Grand Canyon days take 10 to 10.5 hours, Death Valley 12 and Antelope Canyon 15. Don't book a show that night.

  3. Read the cancel window

Most picks allow free cancellation up to 24 hours ahead. The Antelope Canyon trip only allows it up to 4 days before.

  4. Leave luggage at the hotel

Tour buses and vans take no suitcases, the listings say. At Grand Canyon West, 2-strap backpacks are not allowed.

  5. Bring extra water

Desert days are hot, even on a bus tour. In July, Las Vegas highs average 105°F (41°C).
