Las Vegas to Grand Canyon: Distance, Rims and Tours
Las Vegas to Grand Canyon West is 122 miles, about 2 hours and 15 minutes by car, and Las Vegas to the South Rim is 278 miles, with no drive time published. The West Rim is the near one, and it is the one most day trips visit. Below you get both distances, the park fees, the opening hours and the choice between driving and taking a tour.
You have two Grand Canyons to pick from, and the pick decides how far you go. The West Rim fits a day trip. The South Rim is the national park that most photos show, and it is much farther.
| Step | What to do | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Pick the rim | West Rim is 122 miles, South Rim is 278 miles |
| 2 | Add up the drive and the fees | $35 park fee, plus $100 for non-US residents at the South Rim |
| 3 | Choose a car or a tour | A tour includes the driving but not your own timing |
| 4 | Plan the day around the hours | The West Rim sells its last ticket at 4:30 p.m. |
Step 1: Pick the rim for your Las Vegas to Grand Canyon trip
The West Rim is the near rim, and it is the one to choose for a single day. Grand Canyon West sits on Hualapai tribal land, and the National Park Service says it is 122 miles from the center of Las Vegas, outside Grand Canyon National Park. The Skywalk glass bridge is there.
Most photos show the South Rim, the national park itself, with the park entrance, lodges and the classic railings. It is 278 miles from Las Vegas by US-93 south to Kingman, I-40 east to Williams, and Arizona 64 north. That is more than twice the West Rim distance, each way.
To see the Skywalk, choose the West Rim. For the park with its trails along the rim, choose the South Rim and plan to sleep nearby. Would you rather not drive to either? You can tour the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas by coach or small group.
Key Takeaway The West Rim is 122 miles from Las Vegas and the South Rim is 278 miles, so only the West Rim works well as a single day trip.
Step 2: Add up the drive time and the park fees
The drive to the West Rim takes about 2 hours and 15 minutes, and the National Park Service gives no drive time for the South Rim. Grand Canyon West itself calls its route a two hour drive. A round trip to the West Rim is about 4.5 hours of driving, before any stops. Grand Canyon West recommends at least three hours on site, and says it can be done in about two if you are short on time. Plan a day of roughly 8 to 9 hours away from the Strip.
The West Rim route follows US-93 south to Boulder City, then Pierce Ferry Road, then Diamond Bar Road, and Grand Canyon West says its main roads are paved. It warns that weather can affect travel, so check conditions before you leave. Private cars cannot go past the parking lots, so you ride its free shuttle to the viewpoints.
The 278 miles to the South Rim is 556 miles round trip. The park publishes no time for it, so do not count on a day trip. Plan a night in or near Williams or Tusayan, or ride a shuttle one way.
Fees differ by rim. Inside the South Rim park, the park fee is $35 per private vehicle and covers everyone in it, for 7 days. Visitors aged 16 and older who live outside the US pay an extra $100 each, unless they hold an annual or America the Beautiful pass. That makes a car with two overseas visitors cost $235 to enter.
The Hualapai Tribe runs the gate at the West Rim, and the park fee does not apply. Grand Canyon West sells the All-Access Pass for $99. It includes the Skywalk, the Zipline, the in-park shuttle and Hualapai guided tours, and prices can change.
| West Rim | South Rim | |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Las Vegas | 122 miles | 278 miles |
| Drive time | About 2 h 15 min | Not published |
| Entry | $99 All-Access Pass per person | $35 per vehicle, plus $100 per non-US resident aged 16+ |
| Fits one day | Yes | Not by car |
Pro Tip If you are not a US resident and plan the South Rim, price an America the Beautiful pass at $250 first. The park says the $100 fee does not apply to visitors who hold one.
Step 3: Decide between driving and a tour
Drive yourself if you want your own schedule and only your own group in the car, and take a tour if you want to skip four and a half hours of driving. Your own car gives you the timing. A tour takes the planning off you, because the coach, the driver and the entry are one booking.
Things to Do in Las Vegas's count of GetYourGuide listings in October 2026 found 23 Grand Canyon trips by road from Las Vegas, from €85 to €459, with a middle price of €183. Of these, 16 name the West Rim or Skywalk and 3 name the South Rim.
The big coaches are the cheapest way to the West Rim. The two coaches include pickup, but the listings give no meeting point, so check the pickup stop when you book. Both exclude tips, and lunch and the Skywalk are options you add. The West Rim bus day trip with a Hoover Dam view, from €88 per person, is run by National Park Express and rates 4.6 from 6,449 reviews on GetYourGuide. It lasts 10.5 hours, takes up to 70 people and offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The West Rim and Hoover Dam coach trip, from €97 per person, is run by Jupiter Legend Corporation, rates 4.8 from 987 reviews and takes up to 57 people.
Prefer fewer people? The small-group West Rim and Hoover Dam tour, from €183 per person, is run by Grand Adventures Tours, takes up to 12 people and lasts 12 hours. It rates 4.8 from 519 reviews, and the listing says it is not suitable for people with mobility impairments. The full list of Grand Canyon tours from Las Vegas shows the rest, including the bus tour option.
The South Rim is harder without a car. The one-way shuttle to Williams, Tusayan or the South Rim, from €85 per person, is run by National Park Express. It rates 4.2 from only 27 reviews, it lists a minimum number of travelers, and it excludes tips. The listing says the meeting point varies by option, so read it before you book. It lasts 1 to 5 hours depending on the option, and the listing allows one suitcase and one small bag per person.
Prices and ratings above are as shown on GetYourGuide in October 2026. Read the terms on each listing, because they state their own cancellation rules.
A tour is the wrong choice if you want a long time at the rim. A 10.5-hour coach day includes the drive and other stops, so the time at the canyon is short. If you want to stay for sunset, drive yourself or look at the Sunset Pass that Grand Canyon West sells for entry after 3 p.m.
The best Grand Canyon trip is the one that fits the hours of the day you actually have.
Step 4: Plan the day around the opening hours
Grand Canyon West opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m., with the last entry ticket sold at 4:30 p.m. In summer the hours move to 5:30 p.m. for the last entry and 7 p.m. for closing. It is open every day of the year.
The hours are Arizona time. Arizona does not change its clocks, so from November 2, 2026, Grand Canyon West is one hour ahead of Las Vegas until March 13, 2027. Before that date the two share the same clock.
For a drive of 2 hours and 15 minutes, leave by 6 a.m. to be at the gate near 8:15 a.m. Allow time to return before dark. Leave the Strip by 9 a.m. at the latest if you want the Skywalk and a meal, and mind the last ticket time.
Plan the South Rim differently. The park fee covers 7 days, so a night or two near Williams makes the 278 miles worth it. Amtrak serves Flagstaff with a bus link to the canyon, and the Grand Canyon Railway runs daily from Williams, according to the National Park Service. Neither starts in Las Vegas.
No public bus from Las Vegas to either rim was found on the official pages read for this guide, so a car, a tour or a shuttle is the realistic choice. For rides inside town, see getting around Las Vegas.
Rather let someone else drive to the canyon?
A tour is worth it if you would rather not drive about 4.5 hours in one day. The coach from €88 per person already includes the bus and Grand Canyon West entry, while driving yourself means petrol, parking and a $99 All-Access Pass if you want the Skywalk, and gives you the longer stay at the rim. These four picks cover the West Rim by big coach or small group and the South Rim by one-way shuttle. They start from about €85 per person for the shuttle and €88 for the coach day trip. Prices are the lowest "from" prices on GetYourGuide.
